-SK San Luis Obispo, CA - A VW van hit me while I was riding my motorcycle. I fell off the bike and slid seventy-five feet on the pavement. My left side was in excruciating pain when they took me to the hospital, and was unable to receive pain medication before surgery on my left arm and leg. The emergency room doctor called a colleague, Dr. John Brady, who was a certified medical-dental therapeutic hypnotist to see if he could help my pain.

Dr. Brady immediately put me at ease when he entered my room. He and checked my pain level and assured me that he could subdue my pain. Within twenty-five minutes of deep therapeutic relaxation, the worst of my pain subsided enough for me to drift off to sleep. The next thing I remember was waking up in the surgery recovery room. WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC RELAXATION and HYPNOTHERAPY
imdha color logo copypng
Therapeutic Relaxation is used by a certified medical/dental hypnotherapist to induce a state of deeply relaxed, highly focused concentration. At HeartLight Wellness we use therapeutic relaxation to assist patients to prepare for and recover from medical and dental treatments. Studies (read below) have shown that this type of hypnotherapy reduces pain, accelerates healing, and boosts patients' immune system response as an adjunct to medical and dental treatments by physicians, dentists, and oral surgeons.

Hypnotherapy is non-medical guided hypnosis achieved with the help of a clinical hypnotherapist. This relaxed state is similar to being wholly absorbed in a book, movie, music, or even one's own thoughts or meditations. In this state, clients can turn their attention entirely inward, free from outside distractions to find and utilize the natural resources deep within themselves that can help them make changes or regain control in certain areas of their life.

ANSWERS FOR FIRST-TIME HYPNOTHERAPY PATIENTS

HYPNOTHERAPY v2png

Q. What is hypnosis?

A
. Hypnosis is a relaxed state of awareness that allows the subconscious mind to be stress-free and open. Hypnosis is meditation with a purpose. A hypnotic state is created through relaxation, focused attention and suggestion. While a person is hypnotized various physical, psychological and behavioral objectives, concerns and challenges can be addressed to achieve the goals of the hypnotized individual.

Q. What are the benefits of combined Acupuncture and Hypnotherapy treatment?

A. In a word, “Synergy.” At HeartLight Wellness of Santa Fe, we use both acupuncture and hypnotherapy together in one synergistic process that accelerates and deepens healing. Synergy means 1 + 1 = 3, so in essence, you get three times the healing power with our combined acupuncture and hypnotherapy treatment.

Q. How does hypnosis work?

A. Hypnosis works through your subconscious mind. The conscious mind, the part of the mind that allows us to be aware of where we are and what we are doing, accounts for only about 10% of our minds ability. The subconscious mind allows all the required physical functions to occur. It also contains our emotions, memories, habits, and belief systems. The subconscious is the part of the brain that we can communicate with during hypnosis to make the changes you want to make, and replace negative thoughts or habits with positive alternatives you request.

Q. What does it feel like to be hypnotized?

A. Relaxed. Because relaxation is the way into the subconscious, you will feel very relaxed and stress-free. Your senses are heightened and smells, sounds, etc. will be exaggerated. Sense of time often is altered seeming either quicker or slower. In fact, a half an hour in hypnosis is equivalent to approximately three hours of normal sleep. Some people will feel warmer or cooler. Sometimes they will get tingly feelings in their body. Sometimes people will feel like they are floating or they may feel heavy. Each time a person is hypnotized the sensations may differ.

Q. Will I be in control?

A. Yes. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist is a trained facilitator and leads the patient through the process similar to a conductor of an orchestra, or an athletic coach. The patient decides if they want to go into a hypnotic state, and how deep they want to go. The patient decides which suggestions work for them, and will reject anything that is not in keeping with their values. At HeartLight Wellness we explain the process before we begin, and have a practice session to show the patient what it feels to be hypnotized so they can decide for themselves if they want to proceed with treatment.

Q. Will I remember everything afterward?

A. Yes. You will hear everything in the environment and be responsive the entire time. If you want the hypnotherapist to make certain post-hypnotic suggestions to help you achieve a goal, change your behavior or break a habit (suggestions that will kick in after the session), discuss them with them, and he/she will put them into your subconscious memory.

Q. How do I know I will wake up from hypnosis?

A. Waking up from hypnosis is a common worry. The fact is, you are in total control of your session and you can ‘wake-up’ at any time. In fact, most people don’t feel like they were hypnotized at all after their first hypnosis session.

Q. Do I have to recall past memories if I want to recover from trauma?

A. No. At HeartLight Wellness we help you focus on solutions rather than problems. If you have memories that are painful your therapist will help you healthily dissociate from them so that you can remember the experience without experiencing the emotions associated with them.

Q. Will I give away any secrets while I am hypnotized?

A. No. Your secrets are safe with you. You won’t say or do anything at all that you don’t want to. Hypnosis is a voluntary state of deep relaxation, and you are in full control of what you say and do.

Q. I went to a hypnotherapist once before, and it didn’t work. Does this mean I’m not able to be hypnotized?

A. No. There may be a lot of factors that momentarily prevent a person from being hypnotized, such as tension, extreme emotional stress or trauma, etc. The most common reason for failure to induce deeply relaxed state is lack of trust and rapport with the therapist.

Q. Can I be treated for different problems at the same time?

A. Yes and No. You can treat different problems if the issues are related (i.e., stress and grinding teeth). However, because hypnosis requires a complete focus of attention on the concern at hand, it is far better to concentrate on one problem at a time.

Use of Therapeutic Relaxation as an
 Adjunct Therapy to Medical Treatment

Therapeutic Relaxation deepens medical and acupuncture treatment using the body’s relaxation response. Scientific research (see studies below) indicate that therapeutic relaxation reduces stress and anxiety before, during and after medical and dental procedures. It is characterized by slower breathing, lower blood pressure, and a deep sense of well-being. Therapeutic relaxation techniques include progressive relaxation, guided imagery, biofeedback, hypnosis, and deep breathing exercises, and benefits include:
Accelerated healing from medical and dental procedures
Improved concentration/memory
Improved deeper/sounder sleep
Improved focus/sharpness
Increased energy and productivity
Increased poise/self-confidence
Pain relief and pain control
Prevention/reduction of stress/tension
Prevention of anxiety/depression
Prevention of hypertension, migraines, headaches, etc.
Recovery from physical injury (auto accidents; sports/ski injuries, etc.)
Reduction of performance and test anxiety
Reduction of anger, guilt, and regret
Reduction of insomnia and fatigue
Below are just a couple of the hundreds of published medical studies and articles on the effectiveness of therapeutic relaxation and hypnotherapy for accelerated healing, pain control, allergies and more as an adjunct to medical care.
